What Is Vocabulary in Reading Comprehension?

Vocabulary in reading comprehension means the words a reader knows and understands in a text, and how that knowledge helps the reader understand the meaning of the whole text.

In other words:

Vocabulary = word knowledge
Reading comprehension = understanding the text
👉 So, vocabulary in reading comprehension is understanding the words so we can understand the text.

If a student does not know the meaning of key words in a text, they will have difficulty understanding the message of the text.

Example:

Sentence:

"Recycling helps decrease waste and protect the environment."

If a student does not know the words recycling, decrease, or waste, they cannot understand the sentence properly.

Why Vocabulary Is Important in Reading

Vocabulary helps readers to:

• understand the ideas in a text,

• identify the main idea and details,

• make inferences (guess meaning),

• and respond correctly to questions

 Types of Vocabulary Question in Reading

1. High-frequency words — common words (e.g., people, make, use)

2. Academic words — used in school texts (e.g., evaluate, impact, maintain)

3. Content-specific words — related to the topic (e.g., pollution, recycle, landfill)

Keeping Our Environment Clean

Keeping our environment clean is important for our health and well-being. A clean environment reduces pollution and prevents the spread of diseases. People should throw waste in the proper bins instead of littering in public places. Recycling helps decrease the amount of garbage that ends up in landfills. We must conserve water and electricity to avoid wasting natural resources. Planting trees can improve air quality and make the surroundings more pleasant. Communities should work together to maintain cleanliness in their neighborhoods. Small actions, such as picking up trash, can create a big positive impact. If everyone is responsible, the environment will remain healthy for future generations.
